Legislative Breakfast Forum

A Legislative Breakfast Forum will be held on Wednesday, January 28, 2009 from 7:30 to 9:30am at the Capitol Plaza Hotel in Jefferson City, Missouri

Missouri Christians Against Racism and Poverty (MOCARP) and Missouri Churches Uniting in Christ (MOCUIC) join together to co-sponsor the second annual ecumenical forum with a focus on:

bulletProviding a setting for dialogue on the pursuit of the common good by the Christian faith community and the political leadership of the state;
bulletIdentifying issues related to making quality, affordable health care accessible to all Missourians;
bulletEnabling religious leaders an opportunity to become informed about critical legislative issues and to continue their witness for justice in the public arena.

As citizens of a democracy, American Christians have both an opportunity and obligation to help give voice to those who are poor and disenfranchised. Our churches have made an intentional commitment to oppose all marginalization in our society. Deep care and concern for our state encourages us to press our government to be the best, most honorable, and most fair that it can in all matters, but particularly those related to opportunity for health care.

For more information and a registration form, please contact the Unity office at 314-382-4241and request a brochure.

St. Jane Center

Unity Lutheran congregation welcomes the North County Community Services Office of Catholic Charities beginning in January, 2009.

Known as the St. Jane Center, this office was previously housed in Ascension-St. Paul Catholic Church in Northwoods, MO. Ownership changes at the church necessitated a move for this outreach office, and their director, Jamie Saunders, contacted Unity for open office space. The St. Jane Center and Hope Center of Catholic Charities will occupy the lower, parking lot side of our education wing, and may wish to develop a portion of the opposite side of this wing at a future date. Included in the scope of Catholic Charities' services will be counseling and finding resources for families affected by economic downturn, overseeing programs on other sites such as after-school programs, young mothers and babies programs, and senior meal programs. The Hope Center specializes in finding help for rent/mortgage and utility payments for those in need. Besides housing administrative and intake offices for these programs, the Unity site may also be a repository for a small emergency food bank as well. Unity's congregation and Council welcome this opportunity to better serve our community and God's people who live nearby.

Unity Lutheran congregation bids farewell to 'Death-to-Life Ministries', a start-up Pentecostal church led by Elder Kelvin Sykes,

which has occupied the spaces above for the past four years. We wish Elder Sykes and Death-to-Life Ministries the best in the new year and success in their ministry to the community.

Women’s Bible Study

On the first Monday of each month a new women’s Bible study is being created. Meeting at 7:00pm in the Upper Fellowship Room, the name of the group has yet to be determined, but there is a committed core of women who are excited about having you be a part of it. The group is using the Bible study materials from the WELCA magazine and every new woman who joins will receive a free subscription to this award winning monthly periodical.

Greetings from Project Peanut Butter!

We are in the midst of great excitement at Project Peanut Butter.

First, our new site in Sierra Leone has gotten off to a wonderful start. Mike and Chelsea, our Sierra Leone staff have already found a factory site, started a temporary factory using restaurant equipment. This will suffice until the large scale equipment arrives.

As well, they have identified clinic sites and begun to distribute RUTF (Chiponde). We are providing RUTF to another NGO, as well. As soon as the factory equipment is installed, we will be providing RUTF to Doctors Without Borders.

Now, in Malawi!

We have begun a program to double the production capacity of our factory. We have so many requests for RUTF that we need a larger factory. This is exciting to us.

We are also beginning to develop new RUTF formulas. Our original formula is designed for children from six months to five years. It is quite "usable" for others, but we would like to develop formulas specifically for HIV-infected adults, children under six months, for moderate malnutrition. (Our recipe is formulated for severely malnourished children.) We also want to work with decreasing the amount of milk in the original formula if we can do that without decreasing the nutritional value of the RUTF. Although milk only accounts for 25% of the product, it accounts for over 67% of the cost. We will only change the recipe if we can prove through repeated field trials that the new recipe is equal to or superior to the original recipe.

We again thank you for your ongoing support of our work!

Through Christ, the true healer,
Mardi Manary
